“I started with Metroline in April 2008 and I’ve been at this garage four or five months. I finished studying as an engineer in Poland and worked in network planning for a mobile phone company. I liked the UK after my first visit. I go back to Poland every two weeks to visit my daughter.
I try to learn as much as I can through talking to other people in English, trying to learn everywhere. At the beginning when I came to this country I couldn’t understand, even though I had learnt English in Poland – I couldn’t understand the different accents.
Now I’m catching more, not all the details sometimes, but the meaning of sentences. It’s a help with my job. When passengers ask me something I’m able to answer them – “Are you passing Edgware Road?” If I can’t answer it’s a pity, it’s a shame on me. I hope in one or two years my language will be much better.
I like the Learning Bus because it is something different from driving, even if I have a one hour break, it’s good to have a change, give my attention to learning and not worry about driving and people. I can learn here, it’s flexible, not fixed. I do as much as I can when I’m here, I have the time to go over my work. It depends on me how much time I can spend here, around my work.
