“I’m a Site Manager at Broadwater Farm Primary School and Children’s Centre. We have children aged 6 months to 4 years in the children’s centre, and 4-11 in the primary school. I’m responsible for health and safety, it involves loads of paperwork, risk assessments, regulations on legionnaire’s disease, fire, asbestos and so on.
I’ve been doing this since November 2005, before that I was a milkman. I went to secondary modern school, I was good at maths, but I had no formal qualifications. Now I've done a site manager’s competence course as well as short training courses on health and safety, fire and asbestos.
This School Support course is different, more to do with the safeguarding of the children, and I’m learning all the time. I’m enjoying it – I get to meet other site managers, it’s helpful. There’s also a site managers’ forum where we talk about different contracts, ordering, supplies and estimates.
I’d like to go on a course – plumbing, carpentry, locksmith - to be able to do more practical work on site. This is the best job I’ve ever had. The people are great. I’ve worked with the assessor, she’s lovely, very helpful."
