"I’d like to go back to employment, and this qualification will really help me"

Farah fits her studies at the College around a busy home life, looking after her two young children. She started her IT Practitioner BTEC First Diploma here in September 2008.

“The College is really convenient for me to get to from where I live in Stamford Hill. My teacher has been very flexible when I sometimes have to miss part of a class because of my childcare arrangements – I’m always able to find out what I need to catch up with.”

“I’m doing an IT course because I think it will be a good preparation for lots of different jobs – I’d like to go back to part-time employment, and this qualification will help me. The computers in class are nice new machines, and we have all the latest software – I’ve particularly enjoyed learning about databases and using Photoshop.”

When she first started, Farah found that the induction – given to all new learners at the College – was a good way to find out about everything else that life at College offers, alongside her classes.

“They opened up all of the areas of the College for us, so we got a real sense of everything that goes on here – not just our own department. We were also introduced to the mentoring service, facilities like the gym, and told about the enrichment programme. I had never really thought about all those other opportunities before I came, but now I’ve joined an exercise classes at the gym, and I’m even doing a cookery class!”
