STEM Students Parliament

Haringey STEM Commission hosted a Future Skills Event at Parliament last month (Tuesday 1 March). Four students from CONEL studying STEM courses joined leading figures from industry and policy at the Palace of Westminster to explore the ways to improve education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and increase access to STEM employment opportunities.

The main discussion of the event covered the skills today’s school students will need to prosper in the world after 2030. The students studying STEM courses at the College participated in a roundtable discussion with the Digital Task Force and STEM employers, giving learners an opportunity to help shape the Commission’s recommendations.

The Commission has been set up to explore the kind of skills our young people will need to prosper in the modern economy and how STEM employers can play a role in supporting Haringey’s schools and colleges. The workshop facilitators were Maggie Philbin, CEO TeenTech CIC and former TV presenter and Catherine West MP for Hornsey & Wood Green.

Rachel Mudikela, a BTEC Science Level 2 student stated: “It was a fantastic event to attend and contribute to the discussions about the impacts and future of STEM careers. I got to meet and network with industry professionals and I gained an insight into the employment demands of the field I want do in the future”.

Anthony Robinson, Head of Quality and Learner Experience said: “The event was great for students to contribute to the commission’s ideas in order to improve education in STEM subjects so that they have the skills to succeed in their industry. It was excellent to be part of an event that encourages employers to work with FE colleges to increase STEM employment opportunities”.
