The awards were designed to recognise students who have excelled in the following categories:
Effort and Determination: Overcoming barriers to learning
Achievement and Successes to date
Contribution to College life
Role model to other learners
There were also two special awards for Young Learner of the Year and the Ian Macwhinnie Award for the Most Outstanding Adult Learner, presented by Jenny Macwhinne.
All learners that were nominated by their tutor for an award received a prize.
The guest speaker was Diane Modahl, the highly successful 800 meter runner who won a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1990.

1. Ian Mcwhinnie was the former Principal of CONEL, now deceased. The special award for the most outstanding adult learner was presented by his wife, Mrs Jenny Mcwhinnie.
