Many of them achieved the necessary grades to enable them to continue with their studies some going on to higher education.
Ashlee Cook, who has lived in Haringey since the age of three, achieved the required grades to cement her admission to City University. She was awarded two A' levels at grade A, one for Sociology and one for Economics and Business. Ashlee also scored a hundred percent in one of her AS History papers, and an overall grade A for the exam.
Twenty year old Ashlee, who shares a flat in Crouch End, put her achievement down to the teaching staff at CONEL, she said: "If it wasn't for the understanding teachers at the College, I wouldn?t have been able to combine the demanding course work, with working part-time. The staff really treated me as an adult; instead of nagging, they listened to any problems I had with the delivery of assignments, and made constructive and helpful comments.
CONEL's 'Teacher of the Year 2003/2004' - Joe Whelan, received praise from students, for his teaching methods. Joe is the course team leader for Humanities, and taught Ashlee Cook. He said: "Ashlee achieved amazing results in her History paper, I doubt whether many students in the UK achieved a hundred percent."
Other students that achieved great results include Ernst Ssengooba, a nineteen year old - originally from Uganda. Ernst, who has been studying at CONEL for three years, achieved an A' level grade A in Economics and grade Cs in Law and English. Donna-Marie Redman from Stamford Hill in Hackney, achieved two grade Bs, in History and English, and a grade A in General Studies. Donna-Marie, who is eighteen, intends to go to Westminster University to study History, as she would like to go on to teach. Dotun Oludide, also eighteen, achieved a grade B in A Level Chemistry, an AS grade A in Mathematics, and B grades in Stats, Physics and Biology. He intends to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Surrey.
Paul Head, Principal at CONEL, said: "Overall, examination results for CONEL students have improved over the last two years. Both curriculum and support staff are working hard to ensure this trend continues. Haringey is one of the poorer London boroughs; but we are determined to give our young people the chance to get the best from education and improve their job prospects, in order to compete with those living in more affluent parts of the country."
