The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London put on a number of workshops aimed at celebrating science, engineering and technology on Wednesday 16 March, as part of National Science and Engineering Week (11-20 March).

The workshops, which coincided with the College’s Tottenham Centre Open Day, showed potential students the range of Applied Science courses the College has on offer and the wide range of exciting careers a qualification in science can lead to, such as nursing, medical research or forensics.

Those who missed out have a second chance to get involved as the workshops are also being run at the College’s Enfield Centre Open Day on Wednesday 30 March between 3.45 and 7pm.

Participants will measure blood pressure, carry out blood tests with a synthetic blood product; undertake fingerprint testing; learn about forensic investigation; and conduct flame tests, looking at how these relate to firework theory. They can also apply and be interviewed for science courses on the day and in some cases be given a conditional offer for September 2011.

Fahmo Sheek (19) came along to the science workshops with her brothers Ali (18) and Abdiwahab (17). She is currently studying nursing at university and now her brothers are looking to follow in her footsteps for a career in medicine.

Fahmo said: “I came today with my brothers as they want to be doctors. We spoke to the tutor who was really helpful and she gave us all advice on progression as well information about the courses at the College. Ali has applied for the Science BTEC Level 2 and once he has completed his Level 3, he will go on to university."

Jane O’Neill, Vice Principal Curriculum and Learner Experience, said: “This is an ideal opportunity for people to experience the College’s excellent facilities, meet tutors and get a feel for the course before applying.

“Success rates on the College’s Applied Science courses exceed the national average and many students progress on to university and then work in exciting science based careers.”
