Local women who have made an outstanding contribution to life in the borough were presented with Unsung Women awards on Saturday (12 March) for their dedication and commitment.

The awards were part of International Women’s Day celebrations in Haringey and were presented in a special ceremony at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London in Tottenham.

Sonia Woods, Music Technology BTEC Level 2 Learner at the College, sang at the ceremony to a delighted audience of 300 women who joined in with her moving rendition of ‘Love lifts us up where we belong’.

Eleven women who devoted their lives to Guiding were given awards. Between them, Brenda Brown, Brenda Chillman, Chris Bright, Connie Topping, Janis Bennett, June Summers, Kathy Greenfield, Liz Crawley, Trish Beasley, Ruth Harper and Kathleen Mulvey, have given more than 250 years of service to Guiding in North London.

The ex leaders of Rainbow, Brownie and Guide units across the borough came together to accept their awards and be rewarded for their hard work and commitment - and even though they are now retired from running units, they continue to help across the district, division and county and are a valuable resource to current leaders.

Jane O’Neill, Vice Principal Curriculum and Learner Experience, said: “The College has hosted the borough’s International Women’s Day celebrations for five years running.  It’s a marvelous way to work together as a community in Haringey to celebrate the many achievements of local women.”

Cllr Bernice Vanier, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion, said: “We’re delighted to show our appreciation for the contribution that these women have made to life in the borough.

“They are an inspiration for hundreds and thousands of local girls and women.”
