The application form is designed to enable candidates to be assessed for shortlisting purposes and to help the College monitor the implementation of its ‘Equal Opportunities Employment Policy’. Your completed application form is the only basis for considering your initial suitability for the post. These notes are designed to help you to complete the application form, and to obtain employment with the College. We recommend very strongly that you read these notes and the information pack before completing your application form.
The application form must be completed in all cases. A Curriculum Vitae will not be seen as a substitute for a properly completed application form.
Job description
This describes the duties and responsibilities of the job advertised. You will need to look at these carefully, together with the Candidate Specification, to assess whether you think that you can meet the requirements and that you wish to apply.
Candidate specification
This sets out the skills, abilities, experience, knowledge and qualifications, which are the criteria, required to do the job. You will be shortlisted solely on the extent to which you demonstrate in your application that you meet the short-listing criteria indicated on the candidate specification form.
Supporting Statement
The section entitled “Details in Support of your Application” invites candidates to write a statement to support their application. This is a vital part of the application process as the information you provide will be used to construct a shortlist of candidates to be called for interview. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your suitability for the job so use it wisely. Use the space to tell us how your experience, skills and training enable you to meet each of the essential selection criteria. Make sure your statement is positive and clearly set out. You may wish to use headings to divide the statements you make. Continue on a second sheet if necessary and remember, if you do not address each of the essential criteria specifically, you will not be short-listed for an interview.
It is important that you do not simply repeat your job history and other details that are already in your application form. You need to explain how you meet the criteria for the post giving examples where possible.
Your statement should be as comprehensive as possible in addressing the details you have been supplied with in relation to the position. Remember to also include details of relevant skills you have acquired outside traditional employment (including voluntary activities) in your examples as these provide a broader view of your suitability for the job.
References
Please ensure that you choose your referees carefully. A suitable referee is someone for whom you have worked in either in paid or voluntary capacity. Please note that personal referees are of little help to the selection panel and will not provide strong supporting evidence for your application. You must provide a reference from your present or most recent employer.
Referees may be approached prior to interview unless otherwise indicated.
Disclosure of criminal convictions
Applicants who are offered employment in certain posts (the Further Details for Applicants and Conditions of Employment will indicate where this is the case) will be subject to a criminal record check from the Criminal Records Bureau before the appointment is confirmed. For this purpose you are required to tell us about any criminal convictions you may have, even if this is regarded as ‘spent’ under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
Criminal records will be taken into account for recruitment purposes only where the conviction is relevant.
The check may include details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings, as well as convictions. Checks may also be made against government lists of information held by the Department for Education and Employment and the Department of Health, including lists of those considered unsuitable for work with young people or vulnerable adults. Having a conviction will not automatically bar you from employment. This will depend on the circumstances and background to your offence(s).
There is a code of practice for registered persons handing Disclosure information. For more information on the disclosure process please go to their website
