What qualifications do I need?You will need an Entry Level 2 Skills for Life qualification or the College's initial assessment, which shows that you are ready to study at Entry Level 3. Criminal Record Bureau checks are required.
What will I learn?This course will provide you with a general introduction to childcare issues. It covers the English, maths and ICT needed for working in childcare and offers the chance to learn childcare skills through the following modules: 'pregnancy and the responsible parent, caring for young children and play and learning at home. You will be encouraged to explore topics including: pregnancy, different types of contraception, how to be a good neighbour and the responsibilities of being a good parent. You will be able to understand the basic needs of young children from birth to 3 years. You will be able to find out about providing a safe environment for children and how to care for a child through the day. You will also be able to find out how to cope with different types of children's behaviour and learn how to choose appropriate play provision for children of different ages.
How will I be taught?This course is delivered through practical tasks, discussions, worksheets, role play, presentations and debates.
How will I be assessed?For the childcare certificate you will need to produce a portfolio of work, which will be assessed by your teacher. For English, maths and ICT, you will take an exam at the end of the year.
What could I do next?You could progress to Level 1 Childcare courses.
