What will I learn?The Community Interpreting programme is designed to train you to work as an interpreter and bridge the language gap between the service provider and the service user in areas such as health, social services, housing, law and immigration. To develop competence in interpreting skills by introducing a variety of interpreting skills and modes and by adhering to the code of ethics of interpreters. To introduce you to the different Public Services areas and familiarise you with a variety of procedures and terminologies. To enable the you to use your language skills appropriately and reflect your social and cultural backgrounds in specific situations. This course is for Bi-lingual candidates who would like to acquire the necessary training and accreditation, to enable them to work as interpreters in different Public Service areas.
What qualifications do I need?You will need to be fluent in spoken and written English, and a language spoken in one of the bilingual communities in London. You will have some informal experience of interpreting for family and friends.
How will I be taught?You will be taught in a classroom using a mixture of group and pair activities and practical activities such as role-plays. You will also use resources such as video, digital audio and the internet to aid your learning.
How will I be assessed?You are assessed through regular homework assignments and informal tutorials. Assessment is continuous, and you will build a portfolio of work to be submitted at the end of the course.
What could I do next?You could progress to further interpreting qualifications or a Diploma course such as the DPSI.
How would this benefit my employer?This course is recognised by the main Community and Public Interpreting Services. Employers will have the reassurance of employing someone with the necessary skills, professional conduct and good ethics to deliver a quality service.

Most courses start in September, January or February and at various points throughout the year. Courses are held at our Tottenham or Enfield Centres.
