  • What will I learn?This course is suitable if you wish to work with children. You will study the development and care of children, providing play activities and health and safety. English language classes will help you to develop your literacy skills. To qualify you to work with children in a school, nursery or preschool, you will need to progress to a Level 2 qualification. As part of the course you will complete a work skills programme that will prepare you for future employment.

  • What qualifications do I need?You will need to have completed Entry Level 3 or have GCSE passes at grade E-F (including English). Mature learners without any formal qualifications need to demonstrate literacy at Entry Level 3 at interview. A good reference is required and you will need to attend an interview.

  • How will I be taught?You will study a variety of units which will internally assessed throughout your course. There will be group activities, discussions, written and practical tasks to complete. You will need to allocate some time outside college to work independently.

  • How will I be assessed?You are assessed through your coursework. You complete a personal action plan and a portfolio showing achievements over the year. English, maths and ICT have tests.

  • What could I do next?If you complete satisfactorily and gain Literacy Level 1, you can apply for a Level 2 childcare course.
