  • What qualifications do I need?You need to be at least 16 years of age and demonstrate an interest in working with children. You must show an ability to work at this level such as three GCSEs (grade D or above) including English or literacy at Level 1 or above. Criminal Record Bureau and Independent Safeguarding Authority checks are required.

  • What will I learn?This course is recognised in the childcare sector as the basic qualification for work as an assistant and can be used to apply for jobs in a range of settings such as nurseries and pre-schools. It covers all aspects of working with children, including supporting play and learning, children's development, equal opportunities; the role of the childcare worker; health and safety, working with parents, providing safe and secure environments and professional skills. Practical activities and tasks undertaken in these settings link theory to practice. You also study Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT and learn the basics of a modern foreign language from the local community and have an opportunity to try out different creative activities.

  • How will I be taught?You have a mixture of group activities, discussions, some lectures and practical activities. You complete practical training of a minimum 65 days in a range of childcare settings as part of your course. Typically this means 35 days in a nursery and 30 days in a school reception or year 1 class.

  • How will I be assessed?You are assessed through a mixture of assignments and portfolio tasks, with a multiple choice test. You must achieve a Pass for your work experience from the placement supervisor.

  • What could I do next?With an overall Grade B or better, you can apply for the CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Childrens and Young People's Workforce. You could gain employment as an assistant in nurseries, schools, or early years' centres.
