What qualifications do I need?You should be registered as a childminder, or intending to register, or working as a nanny. No previous qualifications are required but literacy at, or working towards, Level 2 will be needed for the exam and assignments. Pre-entry English classes may be offered. Criminal Record Bureau checks will be required.
What will I learn?This course consists of 5 units, which are taken separately. Unit 1 and one other unit run each term. You can join the programme at any stage, and unit certificates are issued. A full qualification will be awarded on completion of all 5 units. Units 2-5 cover child development, working with parents, the childcare practitioner and meeting individual needs. All will be linked to the requirements of the new Early Years Foundation Stage as relevant.
How will I be taught?You have a mixture of group activities, discussions, some lectures and practical activities. Your experience as a childminder will be valued and linked to the theory during sessions.
How will I be assessed?Unit 1 has a multiple choice exam and Units 2-5 have written assignments.
What could I do next?On finishing Unit 1 you can complete your application to OFSTED. With further experience you can progress to units 2-5, or NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development.
