"Although we're in hard times at the moment with the recession, learning is carrying on."
"I've been a Union Learning Representative since 1998, through the union UNITE.
The Learning Bus has been based permanently in Willesden Garage since September 2008, and we're building a second Learning Bus at the moment; It's a newer bus, able to go to other garages. The College is supplying the computers through their Employment Training Solutions team.
We run courses in the bus: literacy, numeracy and computing on Tuesdays and ESOL on Fridays. We also have an assessment centre in the new garage in Cricklewood.
The key benefit is bringing tutor-led courses into the garage. We've been running successfully for 10 years. Many staff are from Eastern Europe so there is a great need for ESOL. The College helps with the tutor and the computers, the company provides the Learning Bus. It's a win-win situation.
Drivers use the bus in their own time, but also if they are on standby duties, they can be on the bus. People have even come in here on their holidays, they're that keen on using the Learning Bus.
It's embedded now in the company, it belongs to everybody who works in the company. Although we're in hard times at the moment with the recession, learning is carrying on at Metroline, especially with the company's commitment to a second Learning Bus."
