WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The topics covered are:

  • Principles of Science
  • Chemistry and Our Earth
  • Energy and Our Universe
  • Biology and Our Environment
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications Of Life Science
  • Scientific Skills
  • The Living Body
  • Monitoring the Environment
  • Science in Medicine
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or a Level 1 Diploma in Science, with Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1.

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science has two externally assessed units. This will help learners as they progress either into higher levels of vocational learning or to related academic qualifications. The remaining units are internally assessed.

Internal assessment allows learners to develop a wider range of skills and provides evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. Evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including role play, practical performance and verbal presentations.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Sing-Hi Wang Molina

Qualifications: Ms. Sc. (Eng) Chemical Engineering, Abo Akademi University, Finland. Chemical Engineer, Universidad de Chile, Chile.

Sing-hi joined CONEL in August 2023. She began her teaching career in 2019 and spent the next three years working as a Chemistry Lecturer at UCSH, a private Chilean university. During her leisure hours, she takes on the role of an instructional designer specialising in higher education. To date, she has actively contributed to the creation of over a dozen online courses. She has also worked as an external project evaluator for CORFO, a Chilean government agency that oversees a variety of programs aimed at generating economic development.

Before teaching she spent about 7 years working as a researcher in the pulp and mining industries. After a successful career as a researcher, she decided to take the leap and initiated a project aimed at making science more accessible to the general public. It entailed creating various workshops tailored for children and adolescents, to ignite their interest and curiosity in science and programming.

Her desire to combine her two passions, science and education, inspires her to work daily on improving her abilities as a science lecturer, all in the pursuit of ensuring her students not only learn but also thrive in their educational journeys.

Leonard George

Leonard has 33 years of Science teaching experience; of which to date has spent 21 years in the College of Haringey, Enfield and Northeast London (CONEL) alone. Leonards’ educational training is in a BSc in Biochemistry, an MSc in Applied Human Biology and a PGCE (post-16).

Leonard possesses a diverse knowledge of professional practice. In autumn 2018, Leonard undertook a one-week STEM-sponsored internship in the departments of Medicine, Dentistry and Cell Biology research at Queen Mary University of London, alongside the university teaching staff in their professional practice.

Leonard’s professional teaching and assessment are on Levels 1 - 4 Science classes (also being their tutor). He mentors new staff colleagues commencing their teaching in the Science department. Being in the teaching profession from a very young age has enabled him to share his own pedagogical experience and understanding alongside colleagues with a considerable sense of natural disposition concerning various academic scenarios.

Aside from his experience (over three decades) of teaching Science, Leonard is a very pragmatic and compassionate practitioner, with a keen eye for detail and suitable application of knowledge in the teaching profession. In character, he is quite affable (down-to-earth and approachable), adaptable and dependable. Thus, in his professional practice, Leonard shares his innate virtues of human understanding, patience, the need for appropriate support, and developmental feedback. Overall, a reflective approach to teaching has been the key to consistency and improvement throughout his professional practice.

Chiranjib Ray

Chiranjib works as a Lecturer of Physics and Chemistry at CONEL. Chiranjib has been teaching for 13 years in secondary schools and FE colleges. Chiranjib teaches Chemistry and Physics to BTEC Applied Science cohorts from Level 1 to Level 3. Chiranjib also teaches BTEC National Diploma in Engineering.

In their previous role as Head of Science at Acland Burghley, Chiranjib managed 12 teachers and two technicians. Chiranjib was responsible for the management, organisation and coordination of teaching of three science subjects from Year 7 to Year 13. Chiranjib taught AQA Chemistry to A Level students and the BTEC Level 3 students. Chiranjib also taught science to mix ability sets from Year 7 to Year 11 and a Separate Science Physics set in Year 11. Chiranjib was also the tutor of a Year 12 cohort.

Chiranjib guided tutees in writing their personal statements for UCAS applications and wrote their references. Chiranjib was the lead IV for BTEC. Chiranjib has a thorough knowledge of different systems and processes, including 4 Matrix, ALPS, SIMS, Moodle, Markbook and Enhanced Result Analysis tool. Chiranjib has compiled detailed reports on GCSE and A Level result analysis and made presentations to the SLT and the Governors.

Chiranjib completed a BSC (Hons) in Chemistry, a BEng in Biochemical Engineering, an MBA in Finance, PGCE with QTS, QTLS, NPQML, and NPQSL (ongoing). Chiranjib is reluctant to accept underachievement and strives hard to achieve outstanding results for students and continue to improve their life chances by working in a team.
