ABOUT THE COURSE

This course has been developed to further enhance your knowledge and skills in carpentry and joinery, equipping you for an apprenticeship or other employment. In addition to the underpinning theory, you will take part in a variety of practical tasks including hanging doors, fitting frames, stairs, hand skills, roof and floor construction, windows, and casings and claddings.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
  • Principles of Building Construction
  • Information and Communication
  • Flooring and Roofing
  • Frames, Partitions and Stairs
  • Carpentry Maintenance
  • How to Set up and Operate a Circular Saw

The study programme consists of a carpentry and joinery diploma, Maths and English, work experience and essential digital skills.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above (D or above)

Or

  • Carpentry and Joinery - Level 1 and Functional Skills

All applicants must have an assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

You will also need stationary, overalls and safety boots.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed on your completed practical tasks, against industry standards. Written assessment will include multiple choice questions, paper-based exams and written assignments.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2
If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE, regardless of your age or income. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

This can lead to further study at Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery or an apprenticeship if employment is gained. Construction workers can work in the UK or abroad, in a range of industries, or even set up their own business. Experienced Carpenters and Joiners can expect to earn up to £42k a year.

Opportunities also exist of learners moving into the new developing area of sustainability such as working on prefabricated units.
