ABOUT THE COURSE

Our pre-apprenticeship in rail track maintenance is a fast-track course, equipping you with the knowledge and understanding to gain an apprenticeship, or other employment, in the rail track engineering industry.

Rail track maintenance workers inspect, maintain and repair railway lines and associated services. Their work includes inspecting tracks, bridges, cuttings, embankments, fences and level crossings.

Our teachers are highly experienced, and many are still operational in the rail industry, giving you the most up-to-date safe working methods and technical skills.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Engineering Industry
    You will develop the skills and knowledge that are required to effectively work within a rail engineering environment, health and safety, methods of communication, drawing and specifications and the general person skills needed to be effective in the rail engineering workplace
  • Maintaining Mechanical Devices and Equipment
    You will develop the knowledge required to effectively maintain devices and equipment in a logical methodical manner
  • Maintenance Technology
    You will develop the knowledge necessary to effectively work in a maintenance environment
  • Engineering Technology
    You will develop an effective knowledge of engineering materials, mathematics and science applied to engineering applications

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • To be aged 17 or older
  • Two GCSEs at grade 4 or above (A*C) including English and Maths
  • A reference from your previous school/college, with attendance of over 88%

All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

During this course, you will be continuously assessed through skills tests.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

During the course you are expected to have excellent attendance and punctuality; those with 95% or above will be offered an interview with a rail employer and supported in their application, including interview skills and CV making. If you pass your interview with the employer, you will start your apprenticeship.
