Introduction to the course

If you are interested in learning initial counselling skills to help others either in a voluntary or an employment situation, or just want to find out more abut this field, this course is for you.

The course WILL NOT train you to be a Counsellor, but will help you decide whether to have further training. 

The course is practical, experiential and person centred in orientation.

Topics include Verbal and Non Verbal Counselling Skills, Ethical Issues, Self awareness: strengths and limitations, Awareness of Difference.

Learners will be invited to specialist interview with the counselling team before enrolment.

What do I need?

You must be at least 24.

No previous training or experience is required.

After application, you will be invited for an interview which will include both, a group interview and a brief individual interview. If you are suitable for the course you will receive an unconditional offer. Once accepted on the course, you will need to go though the process of enrolment and fee paying.

How is the course taught?

The course is practical and experiential learning methods include working in pairs in small groups and in triads. Learners are involved in regular self-evaluation as well as in giving feedback which facilitate learning. There are also regular Drop-Ins with the course tutors.

How will I be assessed?

The course encourages constant written self review in the form of keeping a learning record journal, peers and tutor’s feedback (internally assessed).

What does it lead to?

The course may lead to a progression onto the CPCAB level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills). You may decide to go onto other courses in the College such as Care and Health, Childcare, Access to Social Work, Youth Work if you have some experience in these areas.
