The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London

London’s #1 College for Skills

Introduction to the course

If you already have some work experience in counselling, whether in the paid or voluntary sector, this person-centred and practical course will help you to develop your listening and counselling skills to further your career prospects. The certificate gained at the end of the course will also give you access to studying for more advanced counselling qualifications.

The course is taught at two centres in North East London - Tottenham and Enfield - and covers topics like Ethnicity and Counselling, Gender and Sexuality, and Ethical Issues in Counselling.

What do I need?

To enrol onto the Counselling Skills Certificate at Level 2, you will need to demonstrate emotional maturity and be able to use counselling skills as part of your paid or voluntary work. You should have a minimum of three years’ work experience.

You will also be required to take an English test (Level 2) and have an interview with a member of the course team before enrolling onto the course.

How is the course taught?

The Level 2 Counselling Skills Certificate is practical and experiential. Learning methods include working with other students on the course. You will be involved in regular self-evaluation, as well as giving feedback to facilitate learning. There are also regular individual tutorials with the course tutors to measure your progress.

How will I be assessed?

The course encourages constant written self-review in the form of keeping a learning review journal and filling in a self-review sheet on a weekly basis. There will be a written assignment, which is assessed internally, in addition to one external assessment based on written feedback in relation to a video.

What does it lead to?

The course may lead to a progression onto our BACP Accredited Diploma in Counselling (based on further interviews). The course can also lead to further study in Person-Centred Art Therapy (PCAT).

Following on from the Level 2 Counselling Skills Certificate, you may decide to go onto other courses at CONEL, such as Health Care and Childcare, if you have some experience in these areas.
