Introduction to the course

The Level 3 Media Production course is a specialist pathway into digital media production. You will be working at an advanced level and expected to have achieved at least four Level 2 qualifications that are equivalent to grades A* to C (in the case of BTECs, merit or above is preferred, as well as English at Level 2).

You will develop digital skills in the following areas:

Film, video and television production

Graphic design

Animation production

Special effects

Digital publishing and page layouts

Photography

Production management

Working with external clients and briefs

Building a professional portfolio

You will use state-of-the-art equipment and software programmes, such as:

Cameras

Tripods

Audio recorders

Green Screen

Premiere Pro

Adobe After Effects

Photoshop

InDesign

Camera Crane

Multi-camera/Live editing

During this course, you will learn about the media industry and develop important employability skills.

The Level 3 Media Production course is split into the following units:

Unit 1: Pre-Production Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative Media Production

Unit 3: Research Techniques for the Creative Media Industries

Unit 7: Understanding the Creative Media Sector

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

Unit 23: Multi-Camera Techniques

Unit 29: Music Video Production

Unit 32: Designing Idents for Television

Unit 51: Page Layout and Design

Unit 54: Digital Graphics for Print

What do I need?

You will need four GCSEs at grades A-C, including English or equivalent Level 2 vocational and literacy qualifications. Relevant work experience will be taken into consideration for adults.

How is the course taught?

This course is taught in a classroom, using the latest technological equipment, including Apple Macs and digital editing facilities. You’ll also have the opportunity to work in a professional recording studio as part of your studies.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous, by portfolio. You will also be assessed through exams, assignments or presentations on this course. Visits, trips and work experience are compulsory as part of your assessment.

What does it lead to?

With this qualification, you will be able to progress to a university degree, or gain employment in the games industry.

What jobs could this lead to?

As an employer, you will have staff who have knowledge of the practical aspects of media production. This includes camerawork, editing, radio production, journalism, interview skills, how to write news and online features, and how to use industry-standard desktop publishing along with image manipulation packages. Staff who have studied this course will have gained practical work skills grounded in theory.
