Introduction to the course
This programme is designed to kick-start your career and provide the necessary skills and techniques for you to become a qualified hairdresser.
By completing this course you will develop essential transferrable skills such as: an awareness of Health and Safety, communication and customer care skills as well as developing specialist hairdressing technical knowledge such as: Shampooing and scalp massage and cutting hair, that are essential for working within the industry or which will provide a stepping stone to undertake advanced training at level 3.
Course content includes:
Health, Safety & Hygiene
Client consultation for hair services
Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
Cut women’s hair
What do I need?
Ideally you should have a good level of English. Interview and initial assessment which will include a practical skills assessment to make sure the course is a good match for you.
You must be able to commit to good attendance and desire to complete the course, e reliable and have the ability to work hard and meet deadlines. You will also be required to work under supervision and follow instructions.
You must set aside time outside of college hours to study, including on-going practise of practical skills. Learners must demonstrate at interview their commitment to self-motivated study.
It will be necessary for you to purchase a Hairdressing Kit and uniform at a cost of approximately £120.
How is the course taught?
You will experience a variety of learning methods and activities, which will include classroom-based theory sessions, hands-on practical sessions and client based sessions which will involve working within the college commercial salon.
Emphasis is placed on correct working procedures and students will be able to develop their individual talents and interests during workshop sessions in our well-equipped salons.
How will I be assessed?
Assessments are continuous throughout the course in the form of assignments and practical observations.
You will keep a personal journal where you will record your own journey throughout the course and review, identify and evaluate how your own skills are developing.
What does it lead to?
Although the progression route to Level 3 is not automatic, following successful completion of this course you may progress onto:
Level 2 Hairdressing
Level 3 Hairdressing
Level 3 hairdressing
You may go straight into employment as a junior stylist.
The course also provides skills transferable to other subject areas such as Beauty Therapy, Nail Technology and Barbering.
You will develop transferrable skills valuable to employers such as: communication and client care skills, industry experience gained through work experience and training within a professional environment, good time keeping, a willingness to learn, knowledge of appropriate dress, an ability to work independently, planning and preparation skills, problem solving and the ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with others.
