Introduction to the course

This qualification is aimed at you if you are looking to start a career as a barber. The qualification covers a wide range of skills and knowledge relating to preparing to work in the barbering industry.

What do I need?

No prior qualifications are needed; however, a good standard of English language is essential.

How is the course taught?

You will attend College on two evenings from 5:30 till 9:00 and on a Saturday from 9:30 till 4:30 where college teachers, employers, and industry experts will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training.

Employers and industry experts will provide demonstrations and talks on the industry and specific skills in current demand and may also provide work placements for learners.

 

This practically based training is ideal preparation for further on-the-job training or specialist further study. Please note that you will be required to study and practice in your own time in addition to your college sessions. 

The units covered in this qualification will give you a wider range of progression or employment opportunities and include:

  • Working within the hair industry

  • Health and safety

  • Client consultation

  • Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp

  • Promote products and services

  • Cut men’s hair

  • Cut facial hair

  • Color and lighten hair

  • Style men’s hair

  • Create an image based on a theme

  • Scalp massage

  • Salon reception duties.  

How will I be assessed?

There are practical assessments and theory exams, once a period of instruction is complete assessments are on-going through negotiation with your tutor.

What does it lead to?

This qualification could lead to a job as a barber, working in one of the following establishments:

  • Barbershop  

  • Hair salon

  • Cruise ship

  • Hotel salon

You could progress onto an advanced training course, such as:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Barbering

  • Level 3 Diploma in Woman’s hairdressing

  • Level 3 Diploma for Colour Technicians

  •  Level 3 Diploma for Cutting and Styling technicians

  • Level 3 Diploma in Hair services

  • Level 3 Certificate in Hairdressing
