Introduction to the course

This qualification is suitable as a first step towards a career in the hair and beauty industry.

By completing this course you will develop essential transferrable skills such as: an awareness of Health and Safety, communication and customer care skills as well as developing specialist hairdressing and beauty therapy technical knowledge such as: assisting with skin and hand care, reception duties and setting and dressing hair, that are essential for working within the industry or which will provide a stepping stone to undertake further training at level 2.

Through work experience you will have the opportunity to work within a professional salon; many previous students have seen this lead to part-time and full-time work.

Course content includes:

Consulting clients

Styling and finishing

Setting and dressing

Assisting with hair colouring

Blow drying

Assisting with reception duties

Shampooing and conditioning

Teamwork.

English and maths

What do I need?

Interview and initial assessment which will include a practical skills assessment to make sure the course is a good match for you.

You must be able to provide a good attendance and behaviour report from your school (if appropriate), be reliable and have the ability to work hard and meet deadlines. You will also be required to work under supervision and follow instructions.

You must set aside time outside of college hours to study, including on-going practise of practical skills. Learners must demonstrate at interview their commitment to self-motivated study.

It will be necessary for you to purchase a Hairdressing Kit and uniform at a cost of approximately £80.

How is the course taught?

You will experience a variety of learning methods and activities, which will include classroom-based theory sessions, hands-on practical sessions and client based sessions which will involve working within the college commercial salon.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are continuous throughout the course in the form of on-line tests, projects, assignments and practical observations.

You will keep a personal journal where you will record your own journey throughout the course and review, identify and evaluate how your own skills are developing.

Although the progression route to Level 2 is not automatic, following successful completion of this course you may progress onto:

Level 2 Beauty

Full time:

Level 2 hairdressing

Level 2 Beauty Therapy

Level 2 Nail Technology

Level 2 Barbering

Employment:

You may go straight into a salon as a salon assistant/junior.

The course also provides skills transferable to other subject areas.
