Introduction to the course
Our exciting course will help you to build on your passion for make-up and hone your skills as a serious professional.
As a student on the college's Level 3 Special Effects and Media Make-up Diploma, you will learn how to build character make-up, construct special effects, and safely remove media make-up from the skin. You will learn about the health and safety issues associated with applying make-up to the skin, and gain an insight into human anatomy and physiology. If you haven't already done so, you will also work towards Functional Skills qualifications in maths and English.
During your course, you will practice your new-found make-up skills on yourself, your fellow students, and clients visiting the salon. As a student in the college’s hairdressing and beauty department, you will have the opportunity to learn new management and organisational skills by helping-out with the day-to-day running of the college's salons and reception area.
What do I need?
To enrol on the Level 3 course, you will need to have obtained a Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 2, Make-up Level 2, or a recognised equivalent. The Level 3 course is designed to build on the knowledge you will already have as a qualified Level 2 make-up artist and you will need to be able to demonstrate your existing knowledge and practical expertise at this level. Literacy skills Level 1/2 and numeracy Level 1 is also required. After you have successfully enrolled, your course leader will arrange a meeting with you to discuss the course requirements in more detail.
How is the course taught?
The course content is delivered through a mixture of practical demonstrations and theoretical lessons. As a student at the college, you will be able to access one-to-one tutorial support with your lecturer. All our lecturers are industry-qualified with extensive experience in the make-up industry and in-depth knowledge of new trends.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed routinely throughout the course. Your tutors will assess you through practical observations in the salon, oral questioning during applications, assignments, and online examinations.
What does it lead to?
As the holder of a Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-up, you could go on to enrol on other, higher-level courses within the colour, or a BA or foundation degree with a university. Alternatively, you could use your qualification to seek employment as a make-up artist working in TV, film, or the theatre.
Employers will have qualified theatrical make-up technicians employed and the possibility of staff also going on to become Beauty Therapists.
