London’s College for Skills

Introduction to the course

The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Social Work) is a Level 3 qualification; it is designed to prepare people who don't have traditional gateway qualifications (such as A Levels) for University. The course endeavours to teach students the various study skills that are required to succeed in further education, as well as the various psychological, sociological and health theories currently influencing social work in the UK.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Social Work) is particularly suitable for:

- Adults with a current or previous role in social care (for example, youth worker, care worker, community worker) who wish to gain a degree;

- Adults who were unable to complete their early education, but have an interest in entering a profession related to social work.

Individuals who successfully pass the course can look to pursue degree level courses associated with social work, youth and community work, or social policy.

What do I need?

To apply for our Access to Social Work course, you must be at least 19 years of age and have a Grade C or above in GCSE English and GCSE Maths. You will be required to take an English and Maths assessment and an interview will be arranged with a course leader to discuss your suitability for the course. Experience of working with people within a social care setting (either paid or voluntary) is desirable.

How is the course taught?

The course is made up of 20 distinct units and is taught through a mixture of classroom work, workshops, lectures, class projects, examinations, and discussions. It is recommended that for every hour spent studying in the classroom, you put in the same amount of time in independent research and study outside of college hours. Each of the units is mandatory and will be assessed.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of each unit, you will sit a written assignment and participate in practical work to demonstrate your understanding of the topics studied. Your work will then be assessed by your tutor.

What does it lead to?

Access to Higher Education diplomas are designed to give adults the fundamental knowledge they need to enrol on degree-level courses; as such, many students who successfully complete the Access to Higher Education (Social Work) Diploma go on to study courses relating to Social Work at University. For individuals who do not wish to go to University, the course can lead to careers in the caring profession.

Employer's Benefit

At CONEL we will equip our students with the necessary transferable skills that will benefit potential employers such as: word-processing; spreadsheet (input and analysis) accuracy of language, grammar and general report and writing skills.
