Introduction to the course

Access courses are specifically designed to enable adults who don't have the necessary gateway qualifications such as A Levels to enter Higher Education. The Access to HE Computing Level 3 is a fast-track means to university for adults students who lack formal qualifications but have the motivation and drive required to succeed at university.

As a student studying HE Computing Level 3, you will study a wide range of topics chosen to enhance your knowledge and understanding of essential areas of IT study. Your core modules will include Web Site Design, Programming in Java and Programme Design, Mathematics, as well as the social, legal and health implications of ICT use in society. You will also learn key presentation skills, seminar skills and writing skills that will be crucial at University level.

You will study a range of topics designed to enhance your knowledge and understanding of key areas within ICT.

You will be studying 16 modules throughout the year, some of which are:

  • Web Site Design

  • Programming in Java and Program Design

  • Computer Networks

  • Databases

  • Research Project

  • Improving Own Performance

  • Mathematics

  • Presentation and Seminar skills

Throughout the course you will undertake a research project and participate in lessons aimed at preparing you for higher education. These sessions will focus on developing your academic, literacy and examination skills.

What do I need?

In order to apply for an access course, you need to be aged 19 or over and have a GCSE Grade C (or Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent) in English and Maths. You will also be expected to have a level 2 or equivalent qualification in ICT. After you apply, you will be invited to attend an interview at the college, during which time you will be asked to complete an English and maths online assessment.

How is the course taught?

The course is taught predominantly in a classroom environment through lectures, practical assignments, and group work. The methods of teaching are similar in style to those used in universities to help you prepare for study at degree level. Independent learning is an essential skill for university and you will be encouraged to participate in additional hours of independent research outside of your college timetable.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout your time studying with us through a variety of practical projects, coursework assignments and written examinations. You will also compile a portfolio of your written and practical assignments that will also be assessed.

What does it lead to?

Access courses are designed to facilitate adults' progression into higher education courses. Students typically go on to use their Access to HE Computing Level 3 qualification as a stepping-stone to enrolment on a university course. Alternatively, students may progress to studying an HNC/HND (Higher National Certificate/Higher National Diploma).

This course is designed to offer a fast track to university for mature students who have no formal qualifications. It provides a wide a range of work-based information technology skills. Studying software applications, Visual Basic programming, business technology, web page design, communications, study skills and numeracy
