Introduction to the course
The opportunities to build careers in the public services in London are mainly focussed on the emergency services. By enrolling on this course, students will have the opportunity to complete the Security Industry Authority Licence, sport and outdoor coaching quali cations and activity management and leadership qualifications.
Public service organisations such as the Metropolitan Police are raising both the academic and physical tness requirements for applicants so that successful candidates will have a higher level of academic reasoning and ability, along with the level of fitness so that a tter and better equipped service is created for the future.
Through links with organisations such as the Adventure Learning Foundation, Swinley Bike Hub, Middlesex Lords’ Taverners and Middlesex University’s Sports Faculty, students will develop a range of work relevant skills at a higher level, allowing them to progress onto higher-level qualifications or into their chosen career.
You will be exposed to a variety of public service organisations and you will have significant opportunities to network and make valuable contacts with a wide range of both uniformed and non-uniformed services.
Previous groups have had the opportunity to work with First Responder and members of the military services and learners have worked with the Metropolitan Police Service to deliver events on their behalf. To further develop your leadership and management skills, you will be expected to lead and manage the annual expedition weeks for all Public Services learners from both CONEL centres.
What do I need?
- Level 3 qualification in Public Services (A-Level, BTEC - Merit or Distinction grades)

- Level 2 English and Maths
How is the course taught?
Class sizes are between six and twelve students. Each student has a specific personalised learning programme, this programme will also enable you to mentor Level 1 and 2 students as part of your qualification. Our delivery team have over seventy years combined experience of working in the uniformed and non-uniformed public services. You will be taught by former serving members of the Emergency and Military Services. Our aims are to build on your personal confidence, leadership and management skills. This programme will teach you discipline, improve your personal development and give you the opportunity to showcase your organisational skills, needed in any public service.

Unit 1 – Small-scale Research Projects in Public Services
Unit 2 – Organisations and Behaviour
Unit 3 – Fair Treatment in Public Services
Unit 15 – Crime Reduction and Community Safety
Unit 18 – Public Service Activity Management
Unit 19 – Personal Outdoor skills
Unit 26 – Substance Misuse, Culture and Crime
Unit 27 – Criminological Theory relating to Crimes of Violence
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through a range of projects and assignments that support the analysis of research into various aspects of Public Service organisations or through the preparation and delivery of practical activities which are recorded, evaluated and submitted for summative assessment. Your work will take the form of completing journals, drafting reports, presentations, group discussions and the delivery and evaluation of practical sector skills.
You will have a personal tutor, access to excellent teaching and learning facilities including VLE, access to all current publications, reports, documents all on line and in the Learning Resource Centre, definitive on-site reading lists of books and journals, and access to industry standard software and specialist industry equipment via the service sector for Uniformed Service and Outdoor Pursuits activity. To meet all students holistic requirements, we have on site support officers to help you with any other issues.
