Introduction to the course

This Pre-Apprenticeship provides the necessary knowledge and understanding to enable progression into employment within the rail industry and consists of both classroom theory, learning and practical experience attained within a simulated railway environment.

Practical work is undertaken to demonstrate Knowledge & Understanding attained and is very hands on allowing you to achieve personal skills for railway engineering tasks.

What do I need?

Applicants need to be 17-23 to apply, if above 23 then full fees will have to be paid on the first day of the course. If you are 17-18 years old must have GCSE A-C in Both English language and Maths. Candidates over 18, need to be working as a minimum at Entry 3 level and this will be tested with an initial assessment during the interview prior to starting the course.

How is the course taught?

The Pre-Apprenticeship is taught with a combination of classroom and practical experience, including training and developing competency in the use of hand tools and some power tools commonly used in railway engineering.

How will I be assessed?

The Pre-Apprenticeship is assessed both by the practical carrying out of maintenance work on the rail track and gathering evidence for portfolio work based on the tasks set out by your class tutor.

What does it lead to?

The Pre-Apprenticeship leads to an opportunity to be interviewed by a Railway Industry Employer, which could progress into a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship in Railway Engineering.

Successful candidates will go on to complete the Personal Track Safety and Track Induction courses to allow them to work on the railway infrastructure.
