Introduction to the course

This qualification suits adult students wanting to widen their knowledge of Science as it has elements from each of the main science subjects, taught in evenings. This is an ideal course for those who want to consider a possible career in the science field, teaching or nursing where Science GCSE grade 4 or better is compulsory.

We normally expect applicants to this course to have already achieved a Grade D/ 3 at GCSE in a Science subject. However, if you have not taken this GCSE course before, or have studied abroad, we may ask you to complete a short diagnostic test at interview to assess your English and Maths skills.

What do I need?

You will need an existing GCSE grade E for Foundation Level and grade D for the Higher Level.

How is the course taught?

This course is equivalent to two GCSEs. This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification, where. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June. The qualification can be taken at either Foundation Tier or Higher Tier. The lessons will involve a mixture of classroom-based lectures and practical lessons in our specialist science laboratories. The syllabus studies a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed by six written exams, each worth 50% of the final marks. The exam questions will be a mixture of multiple choice; structured; closed short answer and open response questions.

What does it lead to?

You could progress to AS/A Level, or other courses such as teacher training, nursing for which a pass grade at GCSE is an entry requirement.
