Introduction to the course

The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELTA) is an internationally recognised introductory course for anyone wishing to become a qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher. It is also known as Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

This CELTA course is taught at our centre in Tottenham in North East London.

The CELTA is a highly a recommended course for English language whether you have teaching experience or not and is suitable for anyone with an interest in teaching English in the UK or abroad. You may even come from a completely different career path and are now hoping to change careers or explore a new career route.

The course is an intensive programme of study to which you will be required to fully commit. It includes modules on:

  • Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context

  • Language analysis and awareness

  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing

  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts

  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

This is a very practical course with a focus on hands-on teaching practise so that upon completion, you will feel confident beginning or continuing your career as an English as a Second Language teacher with all the skills and knowledge you will need. Many of our students have even gone on to become a teacher of the ESOL courses we offer at CONEL.

What do I need?

The CELTA is a highly recommended qualification whether you have teaching experience or not and is suitable for anyone with an interest in teaching English in the UK or abroad. You may even come from a completely different career path and are now hoping to change careers or explore a new career route.

  • You must have good awareness of language that will enable you to each a range of levels.

  • have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education

  • Have competence in both spoken and written English that enables the course to be undertaken successfully.

  • Students whose first language is not English must be able to provide recent evidence that their spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the course - a recently obtained English language qualification or test result awarded no more than two years prior to the proposed date of enrolment and equivalent to a minimum of Cambridge English CAE Grade A / IELTS 8.0 in all sub-scores.

  • You must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher and to successfully complete the written assignments and teaching practice.
