Introduction to the course

The purpose of the qualification is to provide the learner with an understanding of the role of an Information, Advice and Guidance worker and the skills used in this area.

In achieving the qualification learners will have understood the contexts for the delivery of information, advice or guidance and the importance of effective communication skills in information, advice or guidance delivery.

In achieving the qualification learners will acquire an understanding of advice and guidance in the context of their own organisation as well as the importance of relevant policies to the Information, Advice or Guidance role.

The qualifications are particularly suitable for candidates who are involved in giving advice, information or guidance, as well as those have an interest and/or some involvement in information, advice or guidance delivery but not as their primary role, for example: first line staff - receptionists, learner support workers, mentors, people working in voluntary organisations in a paid or unpaid capacity and people working with further, adult or community groups.

The course covers the following units:

  • Developing Interaction Skills for Information, Advice or Guidance

  • Information, Advice or Guidance in Practice

  • Information, Advice or Guidance – Context

  • Information, Advice or Guidance Work with Groups

  • Managing Information

What do I need?

In order to be able to fully engage with the course content and to be able to complete the coursework, learners will need to have literacy skills which are at least at Level 2, or be working towards this standard. Learners should have at least a Level 1 qualification.

Prior to enrolling on the course, you will be asked to complete an Initial Assessment in order to demonstrate ability to complete academic work at Level 2, which will include:

  • reading and interpreting given tasks

  • providing answers that are clear, logical and understandable

  • organising relevant information clearly and coherently.

How is the course taught?

A wide range of teaching methods are used to meet your learning requirements, including:

· Lectures

· Group activities

· Workshops

· Tutorials

· Sessions in assignment writing

How will I be assessed?

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course. Assessment is subject to internal and external verification.

What does it lead to?

For learners who are in employment, this qualification could enhance their progression opportunities within the place of work.

Learners who complete this qualification may wish to progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance and to other qualifications in Teacher Education, such as Award in Education and Training or a Level 3 qualification in Information, Advice or Guidance.
