Introduction to the course

The course is designed for existing and future practitioners who wish to support learning in a wide range of contexts. It allows practitioners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment in the learning support sector. This award can also provide an important stepping stone for those in related volunteer roles.

This City and Guilds Award course covers the following unit: Preparing to support learning.

What do I need?

All learning support practitioners should have or be developing personal English, mathematics and ICT skills at Level 2. Prior to enrolling on the course, you will be asked to complete an Initial Assessment in English, Maths and ICT in order to demonstrate ability to complete academic work at Level 2.

How is the course taught?

A wide range of teaching methods are used to meet your learning requirements, including:

· Lectures

· Group activities

· Workshops

· Tutorials

· Sessions in assignment writing

How will I be assessed?

You will be continuously assessed throughout the course. Assessment is subject to internal and external verification.

What does it lead to?

Learners who complete this qualification may wish to progress to other qualifications in Learner Support, such as Level 3 Award for Learning Support Practitioners, and in Teacher Education, such as

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training

  • Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching, and

  • Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching
