Here's a guide to help you choose the right course. Whether you visit us on an Open Day, drop in to our Advice and Guidance Centre, come to a taster session or attend an interview, we will be happy to discuss your course choice and help you make the right decision.

Entry level

This level will help you to develop general skills and improve your confidence if you do not have any experience or GCSEs. It will improve your basic reading, number skills and English language skills

What do I need?
• You will take an initial assessment to check your level of English and maths

Qualifications you can achieve:
• Certificate of Achievement
• Literacy and Numeracy
• English for Speakers of Others Languages (ESOL)

Your next choices:
• Level 1 courses

Level 1

This level will give you a good basic knowledge and understanding of the subject area. This level will develop your functional skills and give you some work experience.

What do I need?
• You will take an initial assessment to check your level of English and maths

Qualifications you can achieve:
• Foundation Diplomas
• NVQ Level 1
• BTEC Introductory Award Certificate/Diploma
• City and Guilds Level 1
• English and maths
• English for Speakers of Others Languages (ESOL)
• Pre-Apprenticeships (learning on the job)

Your next choices:
• Level 2 courses
• A job
• An apprenticeship

Level 2

This level will give you a deeper understanding of the subject area. This is a good level of education for employment and will improve your problem solving skills and increase your resourcefulness. This level is often the minimum requirement for employers.

What do I need?
• 4 GCSEs at grades D-G or a Level 1 qualification at Pass

Qualifications you can achieve:
• Higher Diplomas
• NVQ Level 2
• Apprenticeships
• BTEC First Award/Certificate/Diploma
• City and Guilds Level 2
• English and maths

Your next choices:
• Level 3 courses
• Advanced apprenticeship
• Entry level jobs (such as a customer service assistant or receptionist)

Level 3

This level gives you a thorough and developed understanding of the subject area. This level will give you experience in problem-solving, managing a workload and adapting your skills to achieve your objectives. This level is the minimum requirement for applying to universities and is the preferred requirement for most employers.

What do I need?
• 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C or a Level 2 qualification at Merit or Distinction

Qualifications you can achieve:
• Advanced Diplomas
• NVQ Level 3
• Advanced Apprenticeships
• BTEC National Award Certificate/Diploma/Extended Diploma
• City and Guilds Level 3

Your next choices:
• Level 4 courses or higher apprenticeship
• Skilled work (like an engineer or a database administrator)

Level 4 and above

This level involves extensive studying and can help to make you a specialist in your field of learning or work.

What do I need?
• Access to HE Certificates
• One or more A Levels or relevant industry/work experience

Qualifications you can achieve:
• Foundation Degree
• Higher Apprenticeship
• Higher Education Diploma (NHD) or Higher National Certificate (HNC)
• Postgraduate qualifications like a Masters degree

Your next choices:
• Professional roles (banking, management)
• A Higher Education course at the next level
• Postgraduate course
• Professional qualifications (such as a Human resources qualification)
