The Hairdressing NVQ Diploma Level 3 is designed for learners who work in or wish to pursue a career in hairdressing. The Hairdressing NVQ Diploma Level 3 provides the necessary skills and knowledge that prove occupational competence as a senior stylist.

Average Duration: The apprenticeship runs for 18 to 24 months

Course Information

The Advanced Hairdressing Apprenticeship is made up of a framework which includes:

  • Hairdressing NVQ Level 3
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 2
  • English Functional Skills Level 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities


Apprentices may progress to employment as a senior stylist or barber, or the following City & Guilds qualification: Diploma in Management and Advanced Techniques Level 4 in the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Industry.


The apprentice is expected to attend college to attain knowledge, training and complete online exams. In addition, they will also be trained by the employer which is then assessed by college assessors and put together as part of their online portfolio.

Entry qualifications

Applicants will be assessed and interviewed where they will need to demonstrate that they will cover the range required by the relevant NVQ at work. In addition to that the apprentices are expected to carry out initial assessments in English and Math where they would be expected to ideally achieve a level 1 in both the subject areas. If you do have GCSE then you don’t have to do any functional skills as a part of the apprenticeships

How to apply

You can apply through the college application. Once you have applied to the college, you will be invited for an interview at the college and also with the potential employer.

Unit Title

  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Provide client consultation services
  • Provide client consultation services

Optional units include:

  • Salon reception duties
  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
  • Provide a variety of relaxing services
  • Provide creative hair extension services
  • Create a variety of permed effects
  • Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
  • Hair colour correction services
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills
  • Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities


One day a week at our Enfield Centre or Tottenham Centre and the rest of the time working closely with an employer.
