advanced teaching assistant

The Advanced Level Apprenticeship is designed for teaching support staff with a working role, which requires competence in a specialist area and/or across a varied range of responsibilities. They will be working under the direction of a teacher who has overall responsibility for teaching and learning in the classroom. They will contribute to planning, implementing and evaluating learning activities and will work alongside the teacher to support whole class activities, as well as working on their own with individuals or groups of pupils. Job titles may include: teaching assistant; classroom assistant; learning support assistant; additional needs assistant; pastoral/welfare support assistant; bilingual support assistant; foundation stage assistant; learning guide; learning coach; induction mentor; team leader.

Average Duration: The apprenticeship runs for 14 to 18 months

Course Information

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Teaching Assistants is made up of a framework which includes:

  • Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools Diploma Level 3
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 2
  • English Functional Skills Level 2
  • ICT Functional Skills Level 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities


Apprentices may progress to teaching qualifications.


The apprentice is expected to attend college to attain knowledge, training and complete an online portfolio. In addition, they will be trained by the employer, which is then assessed by college assessors and put together as an online portfolio.

Entry qualifications

Applicants will be assessed and interviewed to demonstrate that they are able to cover the range required by the relevant NVQ at work. In addition, the apprentices are expected to carry out initial assessments in English, Maths and ICT. They would be expected to ideally achieve Level 1 in each subject area. If an apprentice has GCSE grade C and above in English and Maths then they do not have to do functional skills as a part of the apprenticeship.

You can apply through the college application. Once you have applied to the college, you will be invited for an interview at the college and also with the potential employer.

  • Understand child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people

One day a week at our Tottenham Campus or Enfield Centre and the rest of the time working closely with an employer. However, if the employer would like the qualification delivered onsite due to work commitments then the college would accommodate that.
