intermediate teaching

The Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (Level 2) for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is designed for learning support staff whose responsibilities at work are closely supervised. They will be working under the direction of the class teacher whose lesson planning and day-to-day direction sets the framework within which the individual works. Job titles include: teaching assistant; classroom assistant; learning support assistant; additional needs assistant; pastoral/welfare support assistant; bilingual support assistant; foundation stage assistant. As an apprentice, the exact nature of the job role will depend on the employer and setting.

Average Duration: The apprenticeship runs for 14 to 18 months

Course Information

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Teaching Assistants is made up of a framework which includes:

  • Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate Level 2
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 1
  • English Functional Skills Level 2
  • ICT Functional Skills Level 1
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities

Progression

Apprentices may progress to the advanced apprenticeship as a Teaching Assistant.

Assessment

The apprentice is expected to attend college to attain knowledge, training and complete an online portfolio. In addition, they will be trained by the employer, which is then assessed by college assessors and put together as an online portfolio.

Entry qualifications

Applicants will be assessed and interviewed where they will need to demonstrate that they are able to cover the range required by the relevant NVQ at work. In addition, the apprentices are expected to carry out initial assessments in English, Math and ICT where they would be expected to ideally achieve Level 1 in each subject area. If an apprentice has GCSE grade C and above in English and Maths then they do not have to do functional skills as a part of the apprenticeship.

You can apply through the college application. Once you have applied to the college, you will be invited for an interview at the college and also with the potential employer

Unit Title

Mandatory Units include:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of the children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Support learning activities

Sample Optional Units include:

  • Schools as organisations
  • Contribute to supporting bilingual learners
  • Invigilate tests and exams
  • Prepare and maintain learning environments
  • Provide displays in schools

Location

We can accommodate different models based on the needs of the employer but generally the model is one/ half day a week at our Enfield Centre or Tottenham Centre and the rest of the time working closely with an employer.
