London’s College for Skills

Learners at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London donned chef hats and aprons yesterday and battled it out in a cooking competition at the Tottenham Centre.

The event – called “On your marks, get set, cook!” – aimed to encourage healthy living and the importance of eating a balanced diet.

Two teams, consisting of students and staff, cooked up a storm with only 15 minutes on the clock.

Each team had to identify their ingredients and then figure out a plan to come up with a culinary masterpiece that would win over the audience.

The Red Team consisted of plumbing students Faycal Aouami and Saad Sid as well as administration apprentice Jacqueline Enti, who works in the Principal’s office.

After careful consideration they made a dish of flash-fried mini meatballs and egg noodle chow mein with a sweet and sour sauce.

Representing the Green Team were students Emma Parker and Ahmed Abdulla as well as staff member Jackie Yarde.

The Green Team dished up oriental salmon fishcakes with lemon scented rice and vegetable chop suey.

Eager on-lookers were selected to sample the meals and then the audience took a vote on which team they thought created the best meal.

The Red Team was awarded first place much to the delight of the team members.

Faycal said he enjoyed teaming up with his fellow classmate Saad and that Jacqueline was a valuable addition too.

Jacqueline said: “I was worried we wouldn’t get everything done in 15 minutes, but we did, and we won! It was a lot of fun to get involved.”

Chartwells, who work with over 2,000 education institutions, helped run the event as part of their “Eat, Learn, Live” ethos which helps educate young people.

Darren Tinkler, Chartwells’ Putting Fun Back Into Food Manager, hosted the event in front of a large lunchtime crowd.

“It’s easy for us all to forget how to eat healthily and what a balanced meal looks like, but today’s competition has proven how easy it is to whip up a quick meal that’s good for you too. I hope the competition will inspire the students to think about how they could live a healthier lifestyle,” he said.
