It has been revealed that a Course Team Leader for Sports at the College of North East London (CONEL) is also a budding fashion designer!
Tosi Umenyilora, from Chingford, did a course in 'Fashion Technology' at City and Islington College from 1999 - 2000 before opening up her own studio creating made to measure pieces for people outside average sizes under her 'Big Tall Small' label.
At the same time, the talented lady was also studying one evening a week to become a gym instructor at Kingsway College in Kings Cross. After completing the year long course she was soon snapped up by Holmes Place in Wood Green as a Fitness Instructor.
At this point Tosi had decided to concentrate on pursuing her career in sports as, although she loved designing and making clothes from scratch, she found working in the studio rather isolated and preferred the interaction with her gym clients.
Such was her talent for helping and encouraging others, Tosi found it was a natural progression to move on to teaching and signed up for the Diploma in Health, Fitness and Sports Massage at CONEL in 2001. After graduating she applied for a teaching position at the College and has been there ever since!
Although always busy with work, she has continued to make her own clothes and items for friends in her spare time. Tosi also has some great ideas for future designs, "I would like to combine my two great loves; sport and fashion by designing a range of supportive and attractive garments for larger people so that they can feel comfortable about getting into exercise." I think that sounds like a fantastic idea. Watch out for Tosis new designs in a high street store near you soon!
