Members of the PASE Football Academy at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London became national champions earlier this month when they competed against college academies across the country.
The College's team won the national Under-19 England Colleges Cup and gained the coveted title as National England College Champions.
Four of the players, Bradley Fraser, Jordan Lawal, Charlie Hunter and Ruddock Yala, were also selected for the England Colleges’ Under-19s team, which makes a total of seven players from the Academy who have represented the National English Colleges’ or England Schools’ Team in the past two seasons – more than any other college academy.
Learner and captain of the team, Bradley Fraser, said: “It has been a great experience playing in the English Colleges National Cup competition this season and I and all the players have enjoyed it. It was the best feeling ever lifting the trophy for the club and the College.”
The Academy, which is a partnership between Boreham Wood FC and the College, is part of the Programme for Academic and Sporting Excellence (PASE). Under the scheme, Football Academy members play semi-professional football, while also studying at the College for a vocational qualification in either sports or construction.
Mario Noto, PASE Academy Head Coach, based at the College's Enfield Centre, said: “It is an amazing achievement to win a national competition. We knew we had a special group of players with great team spirit so we set up to achieve this throughout the whole season. They have put in so much effort and worked hard all year, both academically and on the pitch, so winning this title makes it that little bit more special.”
Due to high demand, the Academy is expanding in 2011-12. Trials are currently taking place. The next dates are 25 May and 5 July at Boreham Wood FC, and 2 June and 12 July at the College’s Enfield Centre 73 Hertford Road EN3 5HA.
