The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London

London’s #1 College for Skills

Animation students from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London were recently chosen to produce a short film commissioned by Haringey Council and funded by DEFRA.

The film
, which focuses on the effects of harmful emissions, is directed at drivers who collect children from school by car and will be shown in 36 GP surgeries, four schools and Wood Green Shopping City for three months during the summer.

The students, Ngozi Chukwukere, Mine Mahmutg and Nicole Moloney who are all studying Animation BTEC Level 3, have been working on the project since the start of term and are delighted with the results.

Mine said: “Having the opportunity to work on a video for Transport for London before we’ve even completed the course is an amazing opportunity. It allowed us to gain commercial experience with a high profile organisation and have a ‘real’ piece of work in our portfolio, which we’re hoping will impress employers."

Nicole Moloney added: “It was a real learning curve and good experience dealing with clients and delivering to a brief. These types of projects are why I love studying at the College, and why I’ve decided to stay on next year and study for my HNC rather than go to university.”

Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said: "This film helps us raise awareness of air pollution issues in a format agreeable to a wider public. It also helps the students to see their production being used in the public domain.

"We want to raise awareness of the everyday, often unconscious driver actions that contribute to poor air quality and the effects on health and wellbeing. Poor air quality can contribute to heart and lung problems, such as asthma, especially in young children whose vital organs are developing."

The film, which has been shared with other local authorities across the country, follows an earlier project delivered by Animation student  Nkakini Echeonwu in 2011, which promoted Haringey Council’s Air Pollution text messaging service.
