Students studying at CONEL (the College of North East London) will soon have an extra activity to enjoy Tottenham Hotspur has agreed to endorse the College's Sports Academy.
CONEL have been given permission to use the Club's logo on all their promotional material advertising the Sports Academy, which is broken down into football (male and female) and basketball (male)
Students who are accepted into the football section of the Academy will have access to the Premier League Club?s indoor training facility at White Hart Lane, as well as community coaches. As a further incentive, the Club have agreed to look at recruiting some graduates from CONEL's Sports Academy to become community coaches.
Any student studying at CONEL can join the Sports Academy ? however those wishing to concentrate on football will be required to sign up for training ten hours per week.
In the 2004/2005 academic year CONEL won the SESSA (Southern England Students Sports Association) Cup and League competing against universities and colleges from all over the south east.
Students will also be able to participate in a variety of other sports including swimming, martial arts and badminton.
Howard Jeffrey - Systems Director of Learner Support, said: "We hope that Spurs' endorsement of our Sports Academy will encourage more students to take up the opportunity to participate in their favourite sport. This will give them a non-academic platform to demonstrate their capabilities and have their achievements recognised. Experience suggests that young people involved in team sports develop valuable skills and become increasingly motivated in other areas of their lives. We hope this will help to raise self esteem in individuals and integrate them more fully into college life."
Kathryn Robinson, Director for Community Development at Tottenham Hotspur said: "We are keen to contribute to the local community and having an input into the development of young people in the borough, is a great way to get involved. The Club is committed to finding the best football coaches in the country and we know there is talent on our doorstep. There are real opportunities for local youngsters to fulfil their potential with Tottenham Hotspur."
Anyone wishing to find out about courses at CONEL, should contact the College's information line on 020 8442 3055.
