A cut above the rest?
We were about to find out if the stylists on The Salon deserved their celebrity status.
The air hummed with anticipation as the hairdressing students at the College of North East London awaited a demonstration from a famous visitor; John from the popular Channel 4 TV series.
He soon arrived and got straight down to work, his expertise obvious as he cut his models shoulder length dark hair using the latest sliding technique (pictured), his confident swipes generating lots of oohs and ahhs from the crowd!
John, who has been in the hairdressing trade for over 20 years and worked all over the world, was happy to share his experience by answering a multitude of questions from students during his demonstration. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge with learners:
'I wanted to come along and show them some different techniques. I think it helps to bring the real world into the college. Hairdressing students need a mix of theory and practice. I would always recommend that they work in a salon as well as studying.'
When asked if he would like to open his own salon he confessed that he would rather teach than have his own business. So Tulay Rashid, Head of Hairdressing, Beauty and Recreation Studies at CONEL, wasted no time in asking him to come in and teach City & Guilds Hairdressing NVQ at Levels 2 and 3. John has already started coming in for one day a week, and will join the team for three days a week once he finishes filming The Salon in March.
