The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London received a welcome visit from top hair and beauty company SoftSheen Carson and L’Oreal earlier this week (Thurs 17 November) when they came to present their Student of the Year award.
Winning student, Tessa Bennett, who is studying Hairdressing Level 2, entered Softsheen Carson and L’Oreal’s Student of the Year Competition, along with her classmates and up to 38 other colleges nationwide.
After the surprise announcement from SoftSheen Carson and L’Oreal representative, Yemi Miles, Tessa told her ecstatic class: “I’m so pleased to have won. I’d really like to thank my tutor, Jennifer, and my classmates for all your support.”
Tessa, who wants to become a Trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) already has two degrees under her belt and previously worked as a professional photographer. She said: “I opted for a change of career after noticing there weren’t many people specialising in Afro/Caribbean hair and scalp conditions in the UK, so seeing the gap in the market and having a genuine interest, I thought it was a good thing to do.”
She added: “Once I complete my Level 3, I’ll be doing two years distance learning before becoming a practitioner.”
Tessa was presented with a certificate, trophy and goody bag from SoftSheen Carson and L’Oreal, and will be attending the prestigious awards ceremony taking place at The Hilton in central London later in the year.
However, it wasn’t only Tessa who did well, as two of her classmates, Cartell Lovidel and Myriam Felah, also received runners up awards.
Tutor, Jennifer Hylton, who teaches the group and encouraged them to enter, said: “This is an amazing achievement from the students. Not only have we a winner in the group but two runners up. It’s a great testament to the talent we have within the College and an incredible boost to all those studying in The School of Hair and Beauty. I am extremely proud of all my students and I’m looking forward to seeing Tessa at the awards ceremony.”
Yemi Miles, Educator at SoftSheen Carson, said “The competition allows students studying Afro/Caribbean hairdressing to showcase their talents. It’s also an opportunity for students to present new and innovative styles which may push their creativity, skills and aspiration more in this industry. We are proud to have Tessa and Jennifer as our VIP guests at the most prestigious Afro/Caribbean hair and beauty ceremony in the UK which takes place later this year .”
