Paris and portraits!
As part of their coursework, a group of learners from the College of North East London (CONEL) recently went on a fabulous cultural trip to Paris so that they could experience art through the culture of a new country.
Arteh Odjidja, a 20 year old art student from Hornsey, heard about similar excursions through students at other local colleges and felt that he and his classmates should have the same opportunity.
So he did some research and approached the Head of the School of Creative Studies, Sandra Plummer, with a proposal to go to Paris for 3 days and 2 nights with a group of his fellow art students. The visit was agreed, all travel and accommodation costs were paid for by the College and a comprehensive schedule was put together.
Our detailed itinerary meant that we really made the most of our time there, says Arteh. We toured famous landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, LArc de Triomphe, Notre Dame and the Sacre Coeur church, which gave us an insight into the history of Paris and France generally. We also visited some of the worlds most recognised art centres and museums such as the Pompidou Centre and the Louvre Museum, where the famous Mona Lisa painting is on show. We also went to the Picasso museum.
Another learner, Francis Odu developed a real appreciation of the citys history, architecture and sculpture. The Eiffel Tower was the highlight of my time in Paris. From the very top you can really appreciate the work that has gone into restructuring the city after World War Two. The Louvre was the most outstanding museum for me, as I loved the sculptures made by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians.
Arteh has just successfully finished his second year of an Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) in art and design at CONEL. He plans to continue his studies by going to do a foundation degree in graphic design at the London College of Communication in September, where he hopes to qualify as a graphic designer and photographer.
Sandra Plummer concludes This was a much appreciated experience for all the learners and a perfect end to the study year. It is wonderful that they had the opportunity to go to Paris to experience art at first hand.
