A collection of seventies inspired clothes went on show yesterday (13 June) as fashion students from the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London held the first of two end of year fashion shows.
Family and friends applauded students work as models glided down the catwalk at the College’s Tottenham Centre to pumping seventies beats, showcasing a variety of designs from mini dresses and hot pants to evening gowns and two pieces.
The students who are studying Art and Design Fashion Pathway Level 3 have been working on their designs over the last nine months with each having at least three pieces on display.
Student Doreen Antwi, who designed five pieces, demonstrated great skill in her designs with her two piece short suit, flattering bodycon dress and pencil skirt. She said: “When we were given the assignment I thought about strong characters throughout the seventies and Grace Jones came to mind. She has such a dominant style that demands attention and that’s what I wanted with my designs, which are sharp and tailored.”
Doreen, who is going to Middlesex University to study BA in Fashion and Textiles in September, is just one of the students who will be progressing onto higher education this year.
“I’m really looking forward to starting my degree” says Doreen. “I love fashion so I enjoy every minute of it. I’m already designing clothes for myself and my friends so I’m hoping to open a boutique when I finish.”
Vice Principal of Curriculum and Learner Experience, Jane O’Neill, said: “The fashion show is always a highlight in the College’s calendar. The students have once again performed outstandingly and I congratulate them on their success.”
A further fashion show run at 7pm, alongside Art and Design students’ private viewing for family and friends.
Work from Art and Design students can also be viewed in a public viewing on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 June, 11am – 4pm. People interested in attending are welcome to come along and can register their attendance at: www.conel.ac.uk/shows
