College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London Barbering Lecturer MK, short for Muctaru Kargbo, scooped the prestigious UK Black Beauty Hair Award for the third year running at a glamorous awards ceremony last month (29 November). In total, he has won this top title four times.
Held at London’s Hilton Metropole and attended by more than 500 of the country’s top afro hairstylists and professionals, MK is a regular at the awards. He is renowned for his trademark use of graphics and 3D in his hairstyles.
MK has been teaching the Barbering City and Guilds Vocational Qualification at the College for six years, passing on his skills to the lucky few who manage to secure a place on the exclusive course – one of only a few barbering courses taught in the country.
MK said: “I love the opportunities barbering brings. My clients are fascinating; they work in many different industries and are from such varied backgrounds. A barber's salon is like a microcosm of the whole world.
“As well as running my own salon ‘MK Hair Studio and Academy’ I love to teach. The students at the College are extremely dedicated. I’ve taught across the world and they are some of the best students I’ve come across”.
Renault James is currently studying the two year evening course at the College and feels privileged to be taught by MK. He said: “I’ve always cut hair but when I decided to open a salon I thought it was best to get qualified. When I found out MK was the tutor; it was an opportunity I couldn’t afford to miss.
“I’m learning from the best and I feel really lucky to be taught by MK – he’s the top man.”
Renault will be opening his own salon ‘Look Sharpe Professional Hair Studio’ on the Seven Sisters Road in the new year.
Jane O’Neill, Vice Principal Curriculum and Learner Experience, said: “MK is a fine example of the first class vocational tutors we have at the College, and Renault is an example of the ambitious and hard working students who come here to study. I congratulate MK and wish Renault the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
