Nicky Harrison died on Thursday 13 March 2008 following a period of illness.
Nicky became a Governor of the College in November 1993 during which time she served as a member of several committees and was appointed Chair of the Corporation in April 2000, a position she held until the time of her death.
Nicky began her career as a professional dancer and later, as a mother of three living in Haringey, developed her passionate interest in education and local affairs. This led to a long involvement in local politics that saw her serving as an Alderman of the London Borough of Haringey during the period 1971-1978. Overall she served with the Council for fifteen years and her roles included those of Deputy Leader, Chair of Education Committee and Chair of Finance Committee. Nicky also served as a Governor of Middlesex Polytechnic for 8 years and Chair of Governors for Northumberland Park Community School for 10 years.
In the wider educational field Nicky served on a number of other committees including Chair of the Education Committee of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities (1980-1986); Chair and Vice Chair for the Local Education Authorities (1980-1986); and Leader of Burnham Primary and Secondary Management Committee (1984-1986).
Nicky was awarded a CBE in 1984 for her commitment and achievements within education and local government, and in 2006 was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Middlesex University in recognition of her commitment and achievement in the education sector.
In later years Nicky remained active nationally in education as a consultant, was Chair of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), and more recently worked with the Teachers? Support Network.
As Chair of the Corporation at the College of North East London, Nicky led the board during the period that saw CONEL become London's most successful college, and in the top 10% of further education colleges nationally in terms of achievement and success rates. Highly committed and proud of the College, and the diverse communities it serves, Nicky gave freely and extensively of her time and energy to ensure that local people received the very best opportunities to succeed in their lives. A warm and charismatic individual, Nicky will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The Corporation and staff of the College of North East London offer their deepest sympathy to Nicky?s family and friends.
