Talented athlete Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz, who is studying for her Level 3 Sports Diploma at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London, has secured a scholarship worth £3,500 from UK Sport to help her prepare for the 2016 Olympics.

Prisca, who is part of the College’s  Sponsored Athlete Programme and is the 2012 Cadet British Champion, secured her place in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) after the College put her forward.

TASS, which is backed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, is managed on behalf of Sports UK by charity SportsAid. What sets TASS apart from other programmes is its partnership between athletes, educational institutions and sports’ governing bodies. Together, this ensures optimum performance all-round by allowing athletes to train and compete at their best while preparing for life after sport.

Prisca, who hopes to become a Sports Therapist after competing in the 2016 Olympics, was delighted when she heard the news which will allow her to access additional training and support.

As well as receiving individual performance planning, a gym programme, sports massage, therapy sessions for recovery and funding towards event travel costs as part of the College’s sponsorship package, Prisca will receive additional benefits as part of her Sports UK scholarship.

These include sports coaching, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training, lifestyle and education support and access to a medical programme.

College Director, Kurt Hintz, said: “This is a great addition to Prisca’s training programme and will ensure she is fully prepared for the 2016 Olympics, while also allowing her to continue with the studies.”

Prisca said: “I’m so thrilled to have been accepted onto the TASS programme and to have the recognition this gives me as an athlete." An athlete on the College’s Sponsored Athlete Programme, Prisca continued:  “ I  have received vital support from the College’s Sponsored Athlete Programme in terms of providing additional support classes for me when I’m away competing as well as financial help, which means I don’t have to ask my parents to fund my travel.”

The College fully supports and encourages students to participate in sports, offering an enrichment programme which incorporates several sporting activities. In addition students aged 16 – 18 who study at the Enfield Centre and are actively engaged in sport at club, regional or national level can apply for the College’s Sponsored Athlete programme worth over £2k a year.
