Key to another dimension
Getting a computer as a birthday present has opened up a whole new world for retired nurse Patricia Howard.
Patricia, 65, of Tottenham Hale, has taken to the world of computing like a natural culminating in her award as Learner of the Month at The College of North East Londons Learndirect Centre.
I got a computer as a birthday present from my daughter she wanted me to get wise! says Patricia. So I went into CONEL back in 2001 to learn word processing.
While I was there, I spotted the advert for Learndirect and went into the centre to find out about it. Since then, Ive learned about emailing, database, spreadsheets everything!
Now they say I can do the European Computer Driving Licence, which is an industry-recognised qualification. After that, who knows. I want to keep my brain alert!
Patricia says the gift might pay dividends back to her daughter a computer engineer who has just opened her own project management business. I can use what Ive learned to go and help her out from time to time.
I also use it to keep in touch via email with my family, who are spread all over we have relatives in Africa, USA, Jamaica, Canada! Its so good to send something off to them in the touch of a button.
Patricia said learning in CONELs centre has been particularly fun and rewarding. The staff in there are so patient and understanding. They give you one-to-one quality attention. If you have a problem, they come and sit beside you until its worked out.
I really like the centre. I find it a really great asset and I hope to be coming back and back to learn more things!
